2013 12 23 - 29

Prasidėjo Kalėdų šventimas ir čia, ir ten, ir visur! Pirmiausia su draugėm pasidarėm mergaičių naktį pas mane - gėrėm karštą vyną, plepėjom, bandėm įsikvėpti Kalėdų dvasią, nes šiemet ji ko tais nesijuto.

The Christmas celebration began here there and everywhere! Firstly we had a girls night in at my place with mulled wine, chats and hope to ignite the Christmas mood as it was rather down this year.

Manau, kad šventinės dvasios nepajaučiau dėl to, kad jokių dovanėlių niekam nedariau - nei sausainukų nekepiau, nei arbatėlės mišinukų nepadariau, nei kokių kitokių mielybių. Su broliu kūčių vakarą apsitarę nusprendėm, kad visgi reikia ką nors bent tėveliams priburti, tad iš visiškai nieko štai tokią smulkmenėlę sukurpėm. Dėžučių viduje tokios smulkmenėlės kaip rafaelo, mandarinas, įvairių šalių monetos, stalo teniso kamuoliukas, žvakutė ir pan.

I believe I couldn't feel the Christmas spirit because I didn't prepare any presents for anybody - neither did I bake biscuits, nor did I mix a special tea or make any other sweet nothingness. On Christmas Eve I shared this feeling with my brother and we decided we should make something at least for our parents, thus made this little present out of nothing. It's the idea that counts, isn't it! Inside the little boxes were raffaello, clementine, table tennis ball, candle, vitamins, coins from different countries, etc.

Kalėdas pirmąkart švenčiau su tokia minia žmonių - visa giminė buvo pas mus, net seneliai iš Klaipėdos atvažiavę! Kalėdų dieną keliavom žiūrėti 3D instaliacijos ant katedros - gražuma!

It was my first Christmas with such an amount of people - all the relatives gathered at our home, even grandparents from Klaipėda! On the Christmas day after unpacking the presents and eating yet another Christmas meal we went to the city centre to watch a 3D story on the wall of cathedral - beauty!

Likusią savaitę be dar keleto susitikimų su visais fainuoliais praleidau labai ramiai. Turėjau net istorinę dieną, kai iš chalato išlindau tik tam, kad įlįsčiau į vonią. Ak, kaip man tokios ramybės trūko!

The rest of the week, except for a couple more meeting with my dearest, went really quiet. I even had the memorable day when I slipped out of my PJs and the bath robe only to get into a hot bath. Oh how I needed this relaxation!

Using Fashion and Design to Empower Women to Rise Above Poverty

Doesn't sound legit? Well think again! A wonderful entrepreneurial idea carried out by four college girls combined international development with business and changed lives of over 120 Ugandan women.

31 Bits doesn't just sell jewellery. It doesn't just sell wonderful handcrafted 100% recycled jewellery that you would buy because you love it, not because it's a charity. But it also implemented a five-year program in Uganda for each woman to receive health education, finance and business training, and counseling. They have 22 people on their team already and it's all running smooth for more than five years already. It's jewellery that changes lives.

There are so many touching stories, pictures and videos on top of classy jewellery but who would tell their story better than the people who initiated the whole idea themselves, thus give their website a visit!

Shots of Awe

I can't remember how I found Shots of Awe by Jason Silva but they are pure beauty: 2-3 minutes of thoughts, philosophy, wonderful views, literature, life, inspiration, awe.

I find them especially helpful when I get stuck in my mind, going through the same thoughts over and over again without any progress, and don't have time to read a full book or watch a good movie for an external input, especially then this concentration of observations, remarks, citations, and wisdom is a perfect new feed not allowing me to rot.

2013 12 16 - 22

Visa savaitė bėgo pagal grafiką: keltis anksti, į rytinę karate treniruotę, susimatyti su draugais arba giminėm, į vakarinę treniruotę, ir vėl pas draugų, o tada į mieląją lovą. Rutina? Prie tokios mielai priprasčiau.

All the week was running to this schedule: waking up early, going to the morning karate training, meeting up with friends or family, the evening training, meeting friends again, and then to my beloved bed. Routine? I'd gladly get used to this.

Pagaliau turėjau truputuką laiko, kad ir minimaliai, pasikultūrinti. Perskaičiau tetos dovanotą labai muzikalią Baricco knygą "Šilkas" ir pabuvojau Gabrielės Ganžaitės parodoj "Sielos Žemėlapiai".

Finally got some time to get a shot of culture. Read a very musical book "Silk" by Alessandro Baricco and visited an exposition "Sielos Žemėlapiai" by Gabrielė Ganžaitė.

2013 12 10 - 15

Ši savaitė prasidėjo antradieniu, nes iš čempionato grįžau tik vėlai pirmadienio vakarą. Iš tiesų grįžau tik trim pilnom dienom, nes ketvirtadienio vakarą išlekiauju namučio. Bet tos trys dienos buvo to vertos - priduoti du darbus, prezentacija, dvigubas gimtadienio vakarėlis ir kalėdinė vakarienė su bučiokais.

The week began  on Tuesday because I only came back from Prague on late Monday evening. To be fair I only came back to the UK for three days as I was leaving home on Thursday night. But those three days were worth it - two submissions, presentation, double B-day party and Christmas dinner with flatmates.

Mano nerealūs draugai man gimtadienio proga padovanojo išmanųjį telefoną! Čia be komentarų, tiesiog. Apšalus likau... Pats gimtadienis prasidėjo klube su fainiausiais draugais ir, amm, ypatingu siurprizu tenais. Dieną mane kilnojo dukart - susiskaipinus su tėvais laptopo pavidalu ir mano pašėlusios kursiokės ant kėdės realybėj!

My unbelievable friends gave me a smartphone as a present! No comments, just. I was stunned... The birthday itself started with my closest friends going out and a tiny, umm, surprise there in the club. During the day I was lifted up (Lithuanian birthday and, apparently, Jewish wedding tradition) both as a laptop during skype call and in flesh on a chair by two crazy (in the best way possible) coursemates!

Ketvirtadienio vakarą po mūsų kalėdinės iškeliavau namo. Skridau per Diuseldorfą, su nuotykiais. Jei anglų kalba negąsdina, nuotykius galit pasiskaityti čia, arba teks susitikt ir arbata mane pavaišint, chi chi!

On Thursday night after the Christmas dinner I started my journey home. I took flights via Düsseldorf, with some crazy adventures. Full story and a lot of pictures here.

Grįžau šeštadienio rytą. Kaip gera galų gale atsipūsti ir ničnieko nedaryt! Ir, žinoma, išsimiegoti. Sekmadienį atšvenčiau gimtadienį su giminėm ir, savaime suprantama, pažiūrėjau Hobitą.

Came back to Lithuania on Saturday morning. Ir was so good to finally do absolutely nothing! And, of course, sleeeeeeeep. On Sunday I had my birthday celebration with relatives and, obviously, watched The Hobbit.

2013 12 02 - 09

Visa savaitė ligi ketvirtadienio tuo pačiu metu ir neegzistavo, ir buvo užimčiausios dienos per ilgą laiką. Dienas planavausi minutėmis, kad spėčiau ir komandinio darbo susitikimuose atbūti, ir kelionei pasiruošti, ir Inžinierių Be Sienų nakčiai kiek galiu daugiau suorganizuoti.

All the week up until Thursday both barely existed and was the busiest period in a while. My days were planned out in minutes so I would manage the meetings for group project, do as much preparation for EWB band night and all the tiny things for the trip itself.

Didžiausias įvykis iš pirmosios pussavaitės buvo trečiadienį, kai univeristete vyko ta pati civilinių inžinierių firmų mugė, per kurią radau savo tobuląjį darbelį vasarą. Atėjus pasilabinti su žmogiukais iš savo firmos buvau be galo maloniai nustebinta - jie prisiminė mane, kalbėdami su kitais paminėdavo detales tiek iš mano darbo vasarą, tiek aplikacijos, o manęs paklausė, ar jiems aplikuosiu šiai vasarai, nes norėtų vėl matyti mano šypseną savo ofise. Negaliu žodžiais nusakyt, kaip nepaprastai šiltai gera būti laukiamai, ir dar savo svajonių vietoj!

The biggest event from the first half-week was on Wednesday when we had the 'Meet the Companies' event at Uni - the same one where I got my perfect placement for summer from. When I came down to say hi to the people from the company I worked for I was endlessly pleasantly surprised - they remembered me, used examples from my work and application form when talking to other interested students, and asked me if I'm thinking of applying for them this summer because they would like to see my smile in the office again. I can't describe in words how incredibly warmly happy it makes me to be welcome, especially in my dream company!

Tądien, kai turėjau išskrist į Prahą, Anglijoj buvo itin stipriai vėjuota. Traukiniai vėlavo po valandą ar daugiau, nemažai jų buvo atšaukti. Kai kurie skrydžiai taip pat, tad gerai, kad skridau iš Londono, ir į jį turėjau autobuso, o ne traukinio bilietą, tad tik su lengvu vėlavimu saugiai nuvykau.

The day I had to fly to Prague was extremely windy in the UK. Trains were cancelled, some flights too but good thing I was flying from Stansted and got there by bus, so just with a slight delay and terrifying turbulence just before landing I got there safe and sound.

Nors oro uoste pasitikimas tikėjosi keturių vaikinukų, o gavo dvi panas, o viešbučio administracija niekaip nesuprato, kas yra Lithuania ir bandė įtikint, kad Litva šitam čempe nedalyvauja (tai Moldova gal?), kambary pasitiko brolis ir draugai, ir prasidėjo visi džiaugsmai. Tiek treniruotės, tiek pasivaikščiojimai po Prahą, tiek vėlyvi pasisėdėjimai beplepant buvo tiesiog tobula, ak, kaip pasiilgus visų buvau! Pats čempionatas buvo smagus - sirgt už kiekvieną fainuolį ryškiai žaliu džemperiu, sukovot savo kovas iki padusimo, plot be galo krašto niūniuojant We are the champions kai mano fainuoliai lipa ant pakylos su milžiniška trispalve. Prisiminsiu ilgai!

Even though the pick-up at the airport expected four guys but got two girls, and the hotel reception haven't heard of Lithuania, then were sure Litva does not compete and wanted to check me in as Moldovan, I got a warm greeting by my brother and friends as I walked into the room and all the fun began. Trainings, strolls in Prague, long chats at night - everything was just perfect; I missed everyone so so much! And the championship itself was amazing: cheer for every fellow with bright lime hoodie, doing my best in my fights, applaud for ages humming We are the champions while my darlings step on the podium with a massive Lithuanian flag. It will stay in my memory for long!

Pasipiktinimas | Resentment

Vilnius - nuostabaus grožio miestas su savo istorija, architektūra, atmosfera. Viena iš ikoniškiausių vietų yra Vilniaus arkikatedra. Gedimino bokštas su plevėsuojančia trispalve fone, užnugary tik ką renovuoti valdovų rūmai. Katedros aikštė su plytelėmis pažymėtom senosiom gynybinėm sienom, varpinė. Priešais Gedimino prospektas, vedantis nuo katedros ligi cerkvės tarsi istorinis tiltas tarp kultūrų, ir neužilgo atsidarantis KFC greito maisto restoranas.

Vilnius - stunningly beautiful town with its history, architecture, and atmosphere. One of the most iconic places is the Cathedral of Vilnius. Gediminas Tower with the Lithuanian flag up in the wind, behind it the newly renovated Palace of the Grand Dukes. Cathedral square with the red stones marking the location of old defense wall, and the bell tower. In front - the Gediminas Avenue connecting the cathedral to the Znamenskoye Orthodox Church like a historical bridge between cultures, and the KFC, opening soon.

Kas toliau? Varpinė turi laisvų plotelių reklamoms prikabint - negi Just Do It su Nike logotipo neatrodytų nuostabiai? Vietoj Lietuvos vėliavos ant Gedimino kalno galėtų plevėsuoti McDonaldo I'm lovin' it, o Kazimiero koplyčia būtų šaunus Burger King: juk išties ir buvo karalių koplytėlė, o žmonės nuvargsta po tas ekskursijas vaikščiodami, čia vietoj būtų kur užkąsti. Karalių tilteliu iš valdovų rūmų galėtų ingridientų papildymus perduot, o ir visai neblogas drive-through išeitų tiesiai į aikštę - Kazimiero karstas sienoj kaip tik langelio dydžio, tad mažiau rekonstrukcijos, mažiau išlaidų.

What's next? The bell tower has some empty spaces to hang advertisements - wouldn't Just Do It with Nike logo look nice on there? And instead of Lithuanian flag on the Gediminas hill there could be McDonald's I'm lovin' it! And the St Casimir's Chapel would make a great Burger King: it was indeed kings' chapel and people do get hungry, so having some fast food halfway through the tour isn't such a bad idea. The little bridge kings used to get to the chapel from the Palace could be used for getting the supply in, and it has the access for an amazing drive-through facility straight to the square - Casimir's coffin is just the right size for the counter, just wreck it out - less reconstruction needed, less expenses.

Žinau, kad persūdžiau, bet manau, kad kryptis ta. Aš to nenoriu, ne taip Vilniaus ateitį įsivaizduoju. Kad ir nepritariu, suprantu tolėliau Gedimino prospekte atidarytas visas grandinines greitmaistyvietes, bet pačioj pačiausioj vietoj? Lietuvišką parduotuvėlę ar kavinukę atidarykim, lietuviškas prekes turistams ir miestelėnams ant lėkštutės paduokim. Juk turim kuo didžiuotis, tereikia tai parodyti ir paremti.

I know I'm over-reacting though I believe the tendency is such. I don't want this, not this way I imagine the future of Vilnius. Although I disprove but I understand the chain fast food places a bit further down the Gediminas Avenue but at the very very place? Let's open a little Lithuanian store or cafe instead, let's put Lithuanian items on display. We have things to be proud of, we just need to show and support them.

2013 11 25 - 12 01

Visą sekmadienį po varžybų mokiausi, ruošiausi pirmadienio egzaminui - pusė viso modulio vertės visgi! Ateinu, ogi studentai streikuoja, į pastatą neįleidžia, tad gavome el.laišką, kad egzaminą atidės. Po vos ne visą savaitę trukusių diskusijų nusprendė, kad egzaminą visiškai atšauks ir reiks daugiau darbelio per atostogas padarius priduot. 

All Sunday after the competition I spent studying for my exam - half of the module after all! So we're there but apparently there's no access to the building due to students protesting, thus here's an email that exam will be rescheduled. After almost the whole week of discussions and not finding a suitable  alternative time at all it was decided that the exam is cancelled and the coursework will be worth the whole of 100% of the module. Woop woop!

Trečiadienis buvo nepaprasta diena. Prabudau savo dienotvarkės viduryje, tad praleidusi pirmą pusę darbų išdėliojau ir likusius į artimiausias dienas. Turėdama visą dieną (na, tuo metu pusę dienos) laisvą, o patikėk manim, ne dažnai taip nutinka, nusprendžiau padirbėti ties universiteto atsiskaitymais, juk turiu priduoti tris iki atostogų. Deja. Vietoj to užtvindžiau butą ir sudaužiau savo stalinę lempą. Ne mano diena, tiesiog ne mano diena.

Wednesday was an extraordinary day. I woke up to a realisation that I have overslept half of the things I had planned for the day and then the other half was postponed by either others or me. Having a day (well, half a day by this point) free of any planned activities - doesn't happen often, believe me! - I decided to work hard on my coursework as I have three pieces to submit before holidays. Nope, that didn't happen either. Instead I flooded my flat and broke my table lamp. Not my day, just not my day.

Gruodžio 6 d. bus/buvo mūsų Inžinierių Be Sienų gyvos muzikos naktis (pati padariau plakatą!), kai rinksim pinigėlius labdarai (na, mums). Įėjimas trys svarai, žmonės galės nusipirkti papuošaliukų (visą naktį gaminau), pyragėlių (čia jau manimi nepasitikėjo, cha cha), ir bus loterija, kur galima laimėti nerealių prizų. Tik tuos prizus mums pirmiausia reikėjo gauti, tad ėjau aplink kiekvieną kavinukę papasakodama šitą istoriją, kol trys davė man kuponiukus nemokamam patiekalui. Jaučiausi daug nuveikus, tad net nuotrauką pasidariau:

6th December will be/was our Engineers Without Borders charity band night (I made the poster up there by myself!). Entrance £3, opportunity to buy awesome jewellery (I made the most of it in the last night) and delicious cakes (I wasn't trusted with this haha), and the raffle with glorious prizes. But firstly we needed to go hunting for those, thus I walked around the Selly Oak until three of the food places gave me coupons for free meals. I felt such a sense of achievement that I even took a photo.

Savaitės pabaigoje (sekmadienį apie 9val. vakaro) sužinojau, kad, visgi, važiuoju į Prahą - į Europos tradicinio karate čempionatą! Išskrendu ketvirtadienį vakarop iš Londono ir grįžtu į jį pirmadienio popietę. Ir, pasirodo, man dvidešimt vieneri ir aš turiu juodą diržą. Tai vat, su begaliniu liūdesiu, kad praleisiu Inžinierių Be Sienų naktį, į kurios organizavimą tiek širdies ir laiko įdėjau, nekantravau vėl susimatyti su visais savo amžinybę nematytais brangenybėm - juk ir mano broliukas startuoja! Nors dabar, kai jau rašau, atrankinės praėję, įspūdžiai su kitos savaitės aprašymu greit!

At the end of the week (9pm on Sunday night to be precise) I found out that I indeed am going to Prague to a European Traditional Karate Championship! I'm leaving on Thursday evening from Luton and coming back to it on Monday afternoon. Also, I'm twenty-one and I have a black belt. So yeah, with a heartbreaking sadness that I won't be able to go to the charity band night that I put the whole of my heart and so much time in organising, I couldn't wait to meet up with all my precious people I haven't seen for ages; even my brother was competing! Even though now that I'm writing this post the qualification round has passes, all the experiences will come with the next post soon, so stay tuned!
